US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 50 percent tariff on any aircraft sold in the United States by Canada, marking the latest escalation in his trade confrontation with Washington’s northern neighbor.
Trump made the threat in a social media post on Thursday, days after warning that he could levy tariffs of up to 100 percent on Canadian imports if Ottawa proceeds with a proposed trade agreement with China.
The president did not provide details on when the proposed aircraft tariffs might take effect, particularly as Canada has already concluded aspects of its planned trade arrangements.
In his latest remarks, Trump said the move was retaliation for Canada’s refusal to certify aircraft produced by Gulfstream Aerospace, which is headquartered in Savannah, Georgia.
The comments underscore growing uncertainty for cross-border trade and the aerospace sector as trade tensions between the two countries continue to intensify.
