Former US President Donald Trump has proposed expelling Spain from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), citing the country’s failure to meet the defense spending target of 5 percent of its gross domestic product.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Thursday, Trump criticized Madrid for what he called its lack of commitment to alliance obligations, saying Spain had no valid excuse for missing the target.
He added that NATO should consider removing Spain from the alliance if it continues to underperform on defense spending.
Trump has long pressed NATO members to increase their military budgets, arguing that the United States bears an unfair share of the alliance’s financial burden.
