U.S. President Donald Trump said a ceasefire between the United States and Iran remained in effect following overnight exchanges of strikes between the two sides.
Speaking in a phone interview with ABC News on Thursday, Trump said, “The ceasefire is in force,” dismissing concerns that the latest military action had undermined the truce.
He described the U.S. strikes on Iran late Thursday as “a light strike,” adding: “It was just a light strike.”
The remarks came after renewed military exchanges heightened tensions in the region and raised questions over the durability of efforts to prevent broader escalation.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have sharply intensified in recent months amid disputes over maritime security, regional military activity and attacks on shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf region.
The United States has increased its military presence in the Middle East, deploying additional naval assets and warning against threats to international shipping lanes, while Iran has repeatedly said it would respond to any military pressure or attacks on its territory.
Diplomatic efforts led by regional and international actors have sought to contain the confrontation and avoid a wider conflict that could disrupt global energy markets and regional stability.
