President Donald Trump will reportedly speak with his Iraqi counterpart President Barham Salih on the issue of withdrawing US forces from Iraq, on the sidelines of the upcoming World Economic Forum, which due to kick off Tuesday in Davos, Switzerland.
CBS TV reported that consultations are under way on the details of the agenda of the two presidents meeting, and the "White House is optimistic about the possibility of such negotiations".
Earlier this month, the Iraqi parliament voted in favor of the withdrawal of all foreign forces completely from the country, two days after the American forces assassinated the top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, but Trump refused to comply with this request, and threatened Baghdad with "imposing unprecedented sanctions."
Meanwhile, Major General Abdul Karim Khalaf, a spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, revealed that there are ongoing talks with Washington to review the security relations between the two countries.
He told "Russia Today" that one of the proposals under consideration is for NATO to be in Iraq and for US forces to be present in this alliance.
Iraqi political forces criticized the American strike by Washington on Soleimani, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, upon his departure from Baghdad International Airport on January 3, and prominent Iraqi figures considered the assassination a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.
This same sovereignty was once again violated days later when Iran responded to America's operation, by targeting two military bases in Iraq, which include American soldiers, via missile strikes.
