US President Donald Trump stated that he is willing to wait for Iran's final response within the framework of ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran, but stressed that this wait "won't be long."
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, Trump added that he prefers to avoid war if possible by giving diplomacy a few extra days, emphasizing that the goal is to save lives and prevent escalation.
According to the American network CBS News, Trump said: "If I can avoid war by waiting a few days, and if I can save lives by waiting a few days, I think that’s a great thing."
However, he warned at the same time that things could develop "very quickly" if Iran does not provide what he described as "the right answers," adding: "We are fully prepared, and we must get 100% complete and correct answers."
Trump noted that reaching an agreement would save "time, effort, and lives," considering this to be the highest priority.
He also expressed his administration's appreciation for the Iranian officials involved in the negotiations, describing them as "more rational," capable, and smart, and expressing hope for an agreement that "is in everyone’s best interest."
