U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to end the war in Gaza has triggered sharp divisions across Israel’s political spectrum, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praising the plan while far-right allies threatened to topple his coalition.

Netanyahu described his visit to Washington as “historic,” saying the plan had shifted the balance by isolating Hamas rather than Israel. He emphasized that the initiative does not include the creation of a Palestinian state.

Opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz voiced support, calling it a chance to secure the release of Israeli hostages and preserve Israel’s military freedom of action. They also urged Arab involvement in the future governance of Gaza.

In contrast, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the deal risked squandering a “historic opportunity” for Israel and pointed to what he called a leadership crisis within the government. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir warned he could withdraw his party’s support and collapse the coalition if Israel does not pursue the complete defeat of Hamas.

Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett described the plan as “painful but necessary” but accused Netanyahu of failing to prevent the October 7 attack and of bearing responsibility for heavy military losses.

Families of hostages stressed that any agreement should be judged solely by its ability to bring captives home alive.

The U.S. proposal has highlighted deep rifts in Israeli politics, leaving Netanyahu caught between opposition support, far-right resistance, and mounting security and public pressures over the conflict in Gaza.
