US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has nominated Pam Bondi, the former Florida attorney general, to be his attorney general, after former congressman Matt Gaetz announced that he would withdraw his nomination for the position.
Gaetz said on Thursday that "while the momentum was strong, it is clear that my appointment has unfairly become a distraction from the critical work of the Trump/Vance administration. There is no time to waste in a long, unnecessary squabbling in Washington, and I will therefore withdraw my name from consideration to continue my work as an attorney."
On his part, Trump commented, "I greatly appreciate the efforts that Matt Gaetz has made recently in seeking confirmation to serve as attorney general. He has done a very good job, but at the same time, he did not want to be a distraction to the administration, which he has great respect for. Matt has a wonderful future ahead of him."
