President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Pete Hegseth, a Fox News anchor known for his strong support of the military, as the next US Secretary of Defense.
This selection underscores Trump’s emphasis on a strong “America First” policy and signals his confidence in Hegseth’s ability to revitalize the nation's defense strategies.
Hegseth’s nomination comes as a surprise, as his name had not been widely mentioned among other likely candidates for the post.
Trump conveyed that Hegseth’s leadership would demonstrate a firm message to US adversaries that America’s military strength is returning to prominence.
Hegseth brings a record of military service from tours in Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan. His contributions have earned him significant commendations, including two Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Alongside his military background, Hegseth has spent eight years with Fox News, notably co-hosting the highly-rated Fox & Friends Weekend, where he has frequently advocated for veteran and military issues.
Trump noted that Hegseth has effectively used his platform to champion the interests of US troops and veterans, highlighting his deep commitment to those who serve.
In addition, Trump referenced Hegseth’s recent book, War on Warriors, which explores Hegseth’s critique of what he views as institutional neglect of veterans.
With his departure from Fox News now confirmed, Hegseth leaves behind a network role he held since 2017, which resonated strongly with the program’s audience, particularly in his coverage of military affairs.
The Senate must confirm Hegseth’s appointment, where Republicans are anticipated to control 53 seats, giving Hegseth a narrow margin for approval if party lines hold firm.
Some initial reactions from Senate Republicans, such as Senator Lisa Murkowski, reflect the unexpected nature of the choice.
While expressing surprise, Murkowski noted that Hegseth’s name had not featured in discussions about potential candidates for Defense Secretary.
