Workers removed President Donald Trump's name from the facade of Washington's Kennedy Center early Saturday, complying with a court ruling that found the renaming of the landmark performing arts venue unlawful without congressional approval.

The removal came less than six months after the center's board voted to rename the institution the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. Crews dismantled the signage overnight after a federal judge ordered the name to be removed from both the building and the center's website.

The ruling stated that only Congress has the authority to change the name of the Kennedy Center, which was established in 1971 as a memorial to former President John F. Kennedy.

The Justice Department had sought a brief extension of the court's deadline, citing safety concerns due to thunderstorms, but the request was ultimately denied.

The case marks the latest legal dispute over Trump's influence at the Kennedy Center, where he appointed allies to the board after his return to office.
