Former US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he is preparing to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, stating that the final documents are being completed.
His comments were made to Just the News, only days after the outlet published an investigation into the group’s activities and growing concerns inside the Trump camp.
The announcement comes amid increasing pressure from Republican lawmakers and some Democrats, who have urged the US State Department to issue the designation. Last week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott labelled both the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and transnational criminal groups.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted in August that the designation was already in progress, although the process is complex due to the many branches of the Muslim Brotherhood that require separate review.
Governor Abbott revealed that Texas has already taken action against the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR, a move not yet taken by the Trump team. He argued that both groups have long pursued aims related to enforcing Islamic law and expanding global influence. He added that the organizations’ global support for terrorism and attempts to undermine US law through violence, threats, and harassment make them unacceptable in the state.
Abbott also directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to open criminal investigations into CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood, focusing on activities linked to terrorism, unlawful enforcement of Islamic law, violence, and intimidation.
In July, Texas Senator Ted Cruz and several colleagues introduced legislation to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, citing links between Hamas and the 7 October attack that killed at least 53 Americans.
Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart and Jared Moskowitz have also reintroduced the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act for 2025, arguing that the group and its affiliates pose a threat to US national security and use Western systems and funding to advance instability and violence.
