US President Donald Trump acknowledged that while there had been a past attempt to effect regime change in Iran, it ultimately failed. Speaking on the sidelines of the G7 Summit during a bilateral meeting with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Trump claimed that Washington has since secured a "good agreement" with Tehran—noting it was achieved without any US financial investment.

"We reached a good agreement with Iran, and we will not invest any money there," Trump stated, while simultaneously walking back long-term regime-change ambitions by adding, "I do not seek regime change in Iran."

Trump emphasized that the core priority remains preventing Tehran from developing nuclear capabilities. "The only important thing is that Iran has not and will not acquire nuclear weapons. If it does, the consequences will be dire."

In a striking remark regarding Iran's current political landscape, Trump added:

"Everyone knows that the first and second tiers of Iranian leaders have been killed, and we are now dealing with reasonable people who are good to work with. They are strong and smart, and they are looking for ways to help their country."

He concluded by stating that nations should be governed through respect rather than fear, reiterating his stance against enforced regime change.
