US President Donald Trump said that European countries are playing a "dangerous game" regarding Greenland, arguing that their positions threaten US interests and strategic security in the region.
Trump confirmed that the United States will raise tariffs to 25% starting June 1st, due to the disputes surrounding Greenland, in a new escalation against several European countries.
Trump stressed that these tariffs will remain in place until an agreement is reached on the purchase of Greenland, emphasizing that Washington will not back down from its position without tangible progress on the issue.
Trump explained that the United States has sought to finalize a deal regarding Greenland for over 150 years, considering American interest in the island to be longstanding and ongoing for strategic reasons.
Trump announced the imposition of a 10% tariff on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, with the rate set to rise to 25% in June if no agreement is reached.
