President Donald Trump announced on Saturday plans to impose an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods, escalating tensions in U.S.-Canada trade relations.

The move comes in response to an anti-tariff television advertisement aired by Ontario during the World Baseball Championship, which used words of former President Ronald Reagan to criticise U.S. tariffs.

Trump expressed anger over the ad, stating that Canada had failed to remove it promptly despite promises from Ontario Premier Doug Ford to pull the advertisement after the weekend. Speaking on his social media platform while en route to Malaysia, Trump described the ad as “fraudulent” and “hostile,” declaring that the extra tariffs would be applied on top of current duties.

The legal authority Trump intends to use to implement the new tariffs remains unclear, and the White House has not provided details on when the 10% increase will take effect or whether it will apply to all Canadian goods.

The additional tariffs threaten to intensify the economic strain on Canada, where more than three-quarters of exports are destined for the United States. Daily trade across the border reaches nearly 3.6 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 2.7 billion USD), including goods and services. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has been seeking ways to negotiate reductions with Washington, but no official response from his office has been reported regarding the latest tariff announcement.
