Trump added that the European Union refuses to purchase American cars and crops, explaining that tariffs on Canada and Mexico will take effect on April 2. He also criticized the European Union, considering it to be founded to blackmail the United States, saying it was primarily created to "play with us."
In a related development, French President Emmanuel Macron will brief European Union leaders on Wednesday on the talks he held Monday with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, via video conference. The EU leaders are scheduled to meet.
