U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed Billy Long from his position as Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and appointed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to serve as acting commissioner, White House and administration sources confirmed on Friday.
The New York Times, which first reported the move, said Long, a former congressman from Missouri, is expected to be nominated for an ambassadorial post, though the target country has not been disclosed.
“Secretary Bessent will now serve as Acting Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service,” a White House official said.
A Treasury Department spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.
Long, who was sworn in as the 51st IRS commissioner in June 2025, had been expected to serve a term lasting until November 2027. His sudden departure comes less than two months into the role.
