The administration of US President Donald Trump plans to admit up to 10,000 additional white South African refugees in the coming months, arguing they face discrimination and persecution in South Africa.

The US Department of State informed Congress that the US could accept as many as 17,500 white South Africans before the end of the fiscal year in September, significantly higher than the previously announced target of 7,500.

Washington justified the increase by citing what it described as “unexpected developments” in South Africa that created a refugee emergency.

The move has intensified tensions between Washington and Pretoria, with the South African government strongly rejecting allegations of systematic discrimination against the country’s white minority.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that white farmers and rural communities in South Africa are being targeted by violence and discriminatory policies, accusations the South African government denies.

The dispute previously led to the suspension of US aid to South Africa and diplomatic tensions between Trump and South African leaders, including disagreements surrounding the G20 summit held in Johannesburg last year.
