Donald Trump said the US is reviewing the possibility of reducing its military presence in Germany, signaling a potential shift in transatlantic defense strategy.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump confirmed that a decision on troop levels could be made in the near term. The review comes amid broader discussions within NATO over burden-sharing and defense commitments among member states.
Germany currently hosts the largest US military presence in Europe, with around 38,000 American troops stationed across multiple bases. The deployment has long been a cornerstone of NATO’s security architecture on the continent.
Earlier reports citing White House sources indicated that Trump has been considering a withdrawal or reduction since returning to office. The president has repeatedly argued that NATO allies must more clearly define security threats and meet defense expectations set by Washington.
The potential move comes as pressure mounts on NATO members to strengthen collective defense and align more closely on strategic priorities, particularly in light of evolving global security challenges.
