US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States will host the 2026 G20 summit, marking the country’s first time in nearly two decades to welcome the gathering of the world’s largest economies.
Trump announced the decision from the Oval Office, linking the summit to the celebrations of America’s 250th anniversary. He stated that the event will take place at his Doral golf resort in southern Florida, describing it as an ideal venue due to its proximity to Miami International Airport.
The move echoes Trump’s earlier attempt during his first term to hold the 2020 G7 summit at the same resort, a plan later abandoned following criticism over potential conflicts of interest. Addressing concerns this time, Trump insisted there was no financial gain involved, but emphasized the importance of providing an effective setting for the global forum.
Trump added that he would welcome Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping as observers at the 2026 summit, though he acknowledged uncertainty over whether they would attend in that capacity.
Both leaders represent G20 member states, with Xi having participated in the 2024 summit in Rio de Janeiro, while Putin joined virtually due to an International Criminal Court arrest warrant issued against him in 2023.
