Former U.S. President Donald Trump said he was responsible for “saving NATO,” as the alliance intensifies coordination among its members to safeguard security in the Arctic region and warns of growing Russian and Chinese involvement.

According to Al Qahera News, Trump asserted, “I am the one who saved NATO,” reiterating a long-standing claim that his pressure on member states to increase defense spending strengthened the transatlantic alliance.

Trump’s remarks came as NATO Secretary General announced that the alliance is closely coordinating with all member states to ensure security and stability in the Arctic, a region of increasing strategic importance due to climate change, emerging shipping routes, and natural resources.

The NATO chief also warned of “serious consequences” stemming from the expanding presence and engagement of Russia and China in the Arctic, describing their activities as a growing challenge to regional and international security.

According to the Secretary General, NATO allies are stepping up consultations and cooperation to address military, economic, and geopolitical risks in the High North, underscoring the alliance’s commitment to collective defense.

Trump has repeatedly argued that NATO was weakened before his presidency, accusing several allies of failing to meet their financial obligations, and maintaining that his confrontational approach forced members to shoulder a greater share of defense costs.

The renewed debate over NATO’s role and leadership comes at a time of heightened global tensions, with the Arctic emerging as a new arena of strategic competition among major powers.
