Former US President Donald Trump demanded the deportation of Democratic Congresswomen Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, suggesting they be committed to a mental health facility, following their public criticism of him during his State of the Union address.

The controversy erupted after Omar, of Somali descent, and Tlaib, of Palestinian descent, openly challenged Trump during his speech on immigration enforcement, shouting that his policies were harming Americans and accusing him of lying.

On Truth Social, Trump described the two lawmakers as mentally unstable and called for them to be sent back to their countries of origin, despite both being US citizens. His post depicted them as “crazy” and “mentally ill,” sparking widespread condemnation.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Trump’s remarks, describing them as xenophobic and disgraceful, while Tlaib responded on X, stating that Trump appeared to be in a state of collapse.

The incident follows Trump’s repeated claims during the speech that Somali Americans were involved in fraud schemes in Minnesota and his broader efforts to deploy armed federal immigration officers to the state under the guise of combating fraud.

Human rights groups have warned that these actions have created an atmosphere of fear among immigrant communities and questioned Trump’s ability to address fraud effectively, citing his previous pardons for convicted offenders.

Trump has also faced criticism recently for posting racially charged videos targeting former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama on social media.
