Former US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will impose an additional 100 percent tariff on Chinese goods and introduce new restrictions on the export of strategic software to China, starting from 1 November.
The move comes in response to what he described as extremely strict measures imposed by Beijing on the export of rare earth minerals.
Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, that, due to this unprecedented situation, the United States will apply a 100 percent tariff on China in addition to the existing duties already in place.
The announcement marks a significant escalation in trade tensions between Washington and Beijing, reviving concerns of a renewed trade war similar to the one during Trump’s presidency.
Rare earth minerals are critical for high-tech industries, including electric vehicles, smartphones, and defense technologies, making China’s export controls a major issue for global supply chains.
