The Belarusian presidency confirmed on Friday that US President Donald Trump accepted an invitation from Alexander Lukashenko to visit Minsk, according to Al Arabiya.
Just hours before his anticipated summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, Trump held a phone conversation with Lukashenko, a close ally of the Kremlin.
Trump announced the call on his platform, Truth Social, describing it as a “great conversation” with Lukashenko, whom he referred to as a “highly respected president,” CNN reported.
The US president said the primary purpose of the call was to thank his Belarusian counterpart for facilitating the release of a prisoner, though he declined to provide further details about the individual.
Trump also noted that the discussion touched on Putin’s upcoming visit to Alaska. “We discussed many topics, including President Putin’s visit,” he wrote. “I look forward to meeting President Lukashenko in the future. Thank you to him for his attention to this matter.”
