Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to embark on a whirlwind tour of Asia next week, with stops in Indonesia, Singapore, and India.
The trip includes attending the Group of Twenty (G20) summit in New Delhi and focusing on economic relations within the thriving regions of Southeast Asia.In Jakarta, Trudeau will participate in a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), where the group of ten nations will ratify a strategic partnership agreement with Canada, as per a statement from the Prime Minister's office.
The subsequent stop in Singapore will involve meetings with the Prime Minister and business leaders to promote investment in Canada and Canadian exports.
Following this, Trudeau is slated to attend the G20 summit, with a focus on climate cooperation, international financial reform for impoverished nations, and energy security.
A press release mentioned that Trudeau's itinerary will allow him only two days in each country, with a central emphasis on boosting trade.
Ottawa is currently in negotiations for separate trade agreements with India and Indonesia, as well as with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a bloc.
A press statement released by Trudeau's office on Wednesday asserted that working cooperatively to address global crises while holding Russia accountable is essential for maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of the G20.
India, the host nation of the summit, had been hesitant to discuss this issue in other G20 events this year and declined requests from countries like Canada to have Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attend the summit.
