Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has unequivocally rejected US President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion to annex Canada as the 51st state of the United States.

Trudeau dismissed the idea as entirely implausible, emphasizing the independence and sovereignty of Canada.

In a statement on the social media platform X, Trudeau declared that there is not even the chance that Canada would ever become part of the United States.

He added that the economic and security partnership between the two nations already benefits both workers and communities without such drastic measures.

Trump had floated the controversial proposal on his platform, Truth Social, suggesting that annexing Canada would resolve what he described as the United States' unsustainable trade deficit and subsidies propping up Canada.

He further claimed that Trudeau’s recent resignation as leader of the Liberal Party was tied to this economic strain.

Trudeau announced on Monday his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party, though he will remain as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen.

This is not the first time Trump has referenced Canada in provocative terms. He previously referred to Trudeau as the “Governor of the Great State of Canada” and warned that a 25% tariff on Canadian goods would be imposed if trade and border issues were not resolved.

Trump has also publicly discussed other bold territorial ambitions, including regaining control of the Panama Canal and purchasing Greenland from Denmark during his next presidential term.
