Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted that the Canadian authorities do not have direct evidence that Chinese diplomats or agents interfered in the Canadian elections.
On Monday, Trudeau told reporters that he takes steps if credible evidence of wrongdoing is presented by foreign agents or officials
He added that the absence of evidence means that the country is not taking any steps, noting that Canada is "a country of the rule of law," and therefore the authorities will not take any action in the absence of specific evidence.
This comes against the backdrop of media reports that spoke of "possible interference" by China in the Canadian elections in 2019 and 2021.
The reports indicated, quoting security and intelligence sources, that China had developed a strategy to interfere in the Canadian federal elections in 2021, to support the Liberal Party so that it could form a "minority government."
