Tourism Ministry Holds Meeting to Review Latest Developments in May

Mostafa Waziri, the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, initiated the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Supreme Council of Antiquities to review the latest developments in the work and achievements carried out by the various sectors of the Council during May.

The ministry received four artifacts coming from Italy, after successfully recovering them and proving that they left Egypt illegally.

The Shatby Cemetery Development Project in Alexandria Governorate was inaugurated, and a number of archaeological discoveries were announced, most notably the discovery of the two largest human and animal embalming workshops, and two tombs, earlier this week, in addition to a number of other archaeological discoveries in Ismailia and Assiut.

Waziri also indicated that excavations have begun at a number of archaeological sites nationwide.

He pointed to the ongoing restoration work in a number of archaeological sites, including the completion of the restoration work of 63 out of 134 columns in the Hall of Columns in the Karnak temples, about 85% of the external walls, and 80% of the Temple of Seti I in Qurna in Luxor. Work is still ongoing to include the chapels and the facade of the temple.

The mechanical and chemical cleaning of the western wall from the outside of the hall of Alexander the Great in the Luxor Temple has also been completed, and the chemical cleaning has been completed by up to 60% in the Mamizi room in the Villa Temple, and other maintenance and restoration works.

Regarding the works that took place in the sector of Islamic, Coptic and Jewish antiquities, Waziri indicated that the works were completed in the palace of Muhammad Ali in Shubra, the Temple of Ibn Ezra and the Fortress of Babylon in ancient Egypt, the mosque and mausoleum of Amir al-Jiyush Ibn al-Fadl Ibn al-Abbas (Sidi Shebl) in Menoufia, and the mosque of al-Zahir Baibars, as well as the Al-Aqmar Mosque on Al-Moez Street, and the Al-Sawaqi building in the Magra Al-Oyoun wall.
