Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, affirmed that the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is an unprecedented global event, explaining that through it, Egypt presents "a beacon to the entire world" with the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization.
In statements aired by "Extra News" TV channel, the Minister said: "With Egyptian hands, and in cooperation with numerous entities, we were able to achieve something that the whole world will talk about, and those who saw it during the soft opening have already spoken highly of it."
Moroever, Fathy revealed that during the soft opening period, GEM recorded around 5,000 visitors daily, anticipating that this number will rise to 15,000 daily after the official inauguration, which equates to nearly 5 million visitors annually. This, he noted, represents a strong boost for cultural tourism in Egypt.
"Cultural tourism in Egypt is different from anywhere else in the world, and we have recently received awards in this field. There was special appreciation from His Excellency the President for this success and the State's support for archaeological projects," Fathy added.
He pointed out that the number of foreign visitors to archaeological sites in Egypt during 2025 had already exceeded one million visitors just a month and a half prior, expecting the increase to continue in the coming period with the accelerated pace of hotels' construction and development of the area surrounding the museum.
