Tourism and Antiquities Minister Khaled El Anany said on Tuesday Egypt received 900,000 tourists in February with an increase of 4% compared to the same period in 2019.

Anani's remarks came during a press conference, co-held by the Ministries of Tourism and Antiquities, Health, and Information.

Anani pointed out that nearly 210,000 tourists visited Egypt in the first seven days in March, adding: "The cruises in Luxor and Aswan have 8,700 tourists."

"On March 5, 7,830 visitors toured the Pyramids Plateau, 4,057 at Karnak Temples, and 966 at Philae Temple," The minister noted.

Anani stressed that Egypt is one of the least suffering countries because of the coronavirus outbreak, saying that the Tourism and Antiquities Ministry periodically coordinates with the Health Ministry to guarantee the safety of the tourists and the tourism sector staff.

He also pointed out that the Health Ministry examined 20% of the tourism sector's staff in Luxor and Aswan.

The minister said that all tourists in Luxor and Aswan could travel and move freely without restrictions.

He further dismissed reports about closing any archaeological site due to the coronavirus, describing such reports as baseless.

"We conducted a medical survey on 50% of the staff, who work in the hotels, and 50% of tourists and all their results were negative," he added.

It is worth noting that the number of the confirmed cases reached 59, 26 of them had been recovered.
