The British Conservative Party has been plunged into fresh chaos following the high-profile exit of Robert Jenrick. Senior party officials have reportedly identified at least 11 Conservative MPs as high-risk "defection targets" who may follow Jenrick’s lead and jump ship to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.
The atmosphere within the Tory ranks has turned toxic after Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch summarily dismissed Jenrick from the Shadow Cabinet on Thursday. The move came after revelations surfaced regarding Jenrick’s alleged negotiations with the right-wing Reform UK. On Friday, Badenoch escalated the rhetoric, branding Jenrick a "liar" who cannot be trusted.
The 'Defection List' Revealed The "watchlist," which was reportedly compiled even before Jenrick’s official departure, includes a mix of veteran heavyweights and rising stars. Notable names on the list include former Home Secretary Suella Braverman, Sir John Hayes, Mark Francois, Esther McVey, Andrew Rosindell, and Sir Desmond Swayne.
The concern isn't limited to the party's "old guard." Newer MPs from the 2024 intake, such as Katie Lam, Bradley Thomas, and Lewis Cocking, are also under scrutiny. Shadow ministers Matt Vickers and Joy Morrissey have also been flagged as potential defectors.
The Farage Factor Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, has been actively fanning the flames. Farage has issued a public ultimatum, urging any Conservatives considering a move to do so before the local elections on May 7th. He warned that those who delay may find the door to Reform UK closed.
While Badenoch insists that purging "unreliable" elements will bring stability to the party, insiders are less optimistic. One source suggested the number of potential defectors could actually exceed 20, as the party struggles to find its footing against a surging Reform UK.
Former minister Michael Gove weighed in on the crisis, warning that Jenrick’s "betrayal" would cause permanent damage to his political reputation. However, for a party already reeling from electoral losses, the fear is that the damage to the Conservative brand may be even more severe.
