On Wednesday, the Government of Tonga announced in a statement that King Tupou VI has appointed Isileli Isaki Eke as the country’s new Prime Minister.
This appointment came a month after he was selected by lawmakers to be the next leader of the Pacific island nation.
Radio France Internationale reported that former Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni resigned in December, stating that the decision was "for the benefit of the country."
Eke also became the Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, which comprises 18 member states.
Eke is a former civil servant and Finance Minister who studied in Australia and Fiji.
He was elected to parliament in 2010, representing Tongatapu Constituency No. 5.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that he looks forward to "continuing to engage" in supporting Tonga's priorities.
