Ahmed Elgendy made Olympics history for Egypt, winning the country’s first-ever medal in the men’s modern pentathlon and the country’s first silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Elgendy, who is only 21 years old, finished in second place with 1,477 points, just five points away from Britain’s Joseph Choong.
In an event that comprises fencing, swimming, riding, shooting, and running, Elgendy stormed up from 13th place to achieve his historic feat.
"I feel great about this victory," the Egyptian said afterward. "It was a dream and it came true. It was hard work and here I am with the silver medal at the Olympic Games. The medal is very heavy. I never expected it to be this heavy."
Elgendy previously won a bronze medal at the 2021 World Cup.
The latter achievement marks Egypt’s fifth medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Hedaya Malak and Seif Eissa won Egypt’s first and second medals in taekwondo, respectively, while Mohamed Elsayed won Egypt’s third medal in wrestling and Giana Farouk won Egypt’s fourth medal in karate.
