Jess Dutton, Ambassador of Canada to the Arab Republic of Egypt, congratulated the Egyptian Olympic team on winning the African Cup of Nations under 23 years, and being qualify for the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
“I wish to applaud the Egyptian men’s national football team & the people of Egypt on their first ever win of the Under-23 African Cup of Nations #AFCONU23. Congratulations to the @Pharaohs & all their fans on this great achievement & for qualifying for the Olympics #Tokyo2020!” Dutton said on his Twitter account on Saturday.
This is the first time that Egypt has won this tournament.
The U-23 Egyptian Olympic team is led by Shawki Gharib.
The Egyptian squad was crowned the African Nations Cup under-23 title, at the expense of Côte d’Ivoire 2-1, in the final of the tournament hosted by Egypt on Friday.
Ramadan Sobhy received the best player of the tournament award for this year’s U-23 African Cup of Nations after leading Egypt throughout the tournament; the young Ahly player scoring the winning goal for his nation.

The tournament will take between 23 JULY and 8 AUGUST 2020 in Japan.
The Men's Olympic Football Tournament returns to Japan after 56 years, when in 1964, Hungary won the gold medal, defeating Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the final.
Japan has a great footballing tradition, having hosting several major international tournaments in the past, including the 2002 FIFA World Cup™ and multiple FIFA Club World Cups.
The AFC U-23 Championship 2020 will be hosted by Thailand and will run from 8 to 26 January 2020. The top three teams (not including hosts Japan) will qualify for the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020.
Japan will take part in the tournament as hosts.
In Europe, the UEFA European U-21 Championship Italy 2019 determined the continent’s participants for the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020. Spain, Germany, Romania and France earned the four berths to the Games.
In North, Central America and Caribbean, the final qualifying tournament in the region will be played from 20 March to 1 April in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Eight teams will compete for two places at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020.
For Oceania, New Zealand won the eight-nation OFC Men's Olympic Tournament 2019 held between 21 September and 5 October 2019 in Fiji to qualifiy for the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020.
In South America, Colombia will host the region's qualifying tournament from 18 January to 9 February 2020. The top two teams will qualify for the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020.
In Africa, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt and South Africa finished in the top three positions and therefore qualified for the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020.
