Today marks the birth anniversary of Sean Connery. He was best known for his portrayal of James Bond in spy thrillers, which launched a successful film career lasting decades.

Born on August 25, 1930, in Edinburgh, Connery grew up in a working-class family. After serving in the Royal Navy for three years and working various jobs, he began bodybuilding and later became a model for student artists and men's fashion catalogs. In 1953, he competed in the Mr. Universe contest, leading to work as an extra in stage productions.

His breakthrough came in 1954 when he landed a small part in the musical South Pacific and eventually took on a leading role. He continued to work in stage and television, including a praised performance as Mountain Rivera in the BBC television production of Requiem for a Heavyweight in 1957. Connery made his film debut in Lilacs in the Spring (1954) and received top billing for the first time in On the Fiddle (1961).

The three-time Golden Globe winner passed away last year. In addition to his iconic portrayal of James Bond, he played prominent roles in films such as The Hunt for Red October, The Name of the Rose, Highlander, The Rock (co-starring with Nic Cage), and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Some of his other notable films from that period include the Disney fantasy Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959) and the World War II epic The Longest Day (1962).
