Today (Oct. 1) marks the 154th birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, one of India's most renowned leaders in the fight for independence.

He was a politician, social activist, and lawyer who was given the title "Mahatma" by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Gandhi's unwavering belief in self-governance and non-violence played a significant role in India's independence in 1947.

Gandhi was born on October 2nd, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. India celebrates his birthday as a national holiday to commemorate his contribution to the country.

Throughout his life, Gandhi led various freedom movements, including the non-cooperation movement, civil disobedience movement, and Quit India movement, against British colonial rule. His words and actions inspired many to actively protest against colonial rule in India.

To honor Gandhi's belief in non-violence, the United Nations declared his birthday, October 2nd, as the International Day of Non-Violence. On this day, prayer services, cultural events, and patriotic activities are held in schools, colleges, and government institutions in India and worldwide.

In 1948, he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist from Maharashtra. However, Gandhi's legacy lives on, and his teachings about self-governance and non-violence continue to inspire people worldwide.
