TikTok and YouTube have suspended nearly 4.7 million accounts belonging to children under the age of 16 in Indonesia as the country's new online child protection regulations officially take effect.

Indonesia's Minister of Communications and Digital Content, Meutya Hafid, announced that TikTok, owned by China's ByteDance, removed approximately 4.1 million accounts, while Google's YouTube suspended around 600,000 accounts.

The government expects other major platforms to implement similar measures in the coming weeks.

The account removals follow regulations introduced in March requiring social media platforms classified as "high-risk" to block users under the age of 16.

The rules currently apply to platforms including X, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and the online gaming platform Roblox.

Hafid said the government's objective is not only to restrict children's access to social media but also to require digital platforms to strengthen their child safety policies and protective measures.

The ministry is currently reviewing self-assessment reports submitted by the affected companies.

Indonesia introduced the regulations to reduce the risks of cyberbullying, excessive screen time, and other online harms affecting children and teenagers.

The policy reflects a growing international trend toward tighter online protections for minors, following similar measures adopted in Australia and proposed new restrictions in the United Kingdom covering social media, gaming platforms, and live-streaming services.
