Thousands of US troops from the elite 82nd Airborne Division have begun arriving in the Middle East, according to two American officials, as President Donald Trump weighs his next move on Iran.
The deployment marks a major escalation in US military presence. On March 18, Reuters reported the Trump administration was considering sending thousands of additional troops to the region, potentially expanding options to include operations inside Iran.
Paratroopers based at Fort Bragg are joining US Navy, Marine Corps, and special operations forces already deployed. About 2,500 Marines arrived earlier this week.
Officials did not reveal exact locations but said the deployment had been expected. It includes elements of the 82nd Airborne, logistical units, and a brigade combat team.
No decision has been made to send forces into Iran, but the increased presence boosts readiness for any future operations in the region.
