The Philippines reported on Sunday that thousands of people were evacuated from the area south of Manila after the Mayon volcano erupted, with authorities advising residents to stay within a 6-kilometer radius of the danger zone.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology issued a Level 3 alert on its 5-point scale, citing "stromboli activity and short-lived lava flows" from one of Southeast Asia's most active volcanoes, according to Bloomberg. The institute also warned of the risks of landslides and lava flows.
According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development, approximately 1,500 families are currently staying in evacuation centers. Heavy ashfall blanketed several towns in Albay province, disrupting traffic, according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
