Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate areas near Seattle after a dam collapsed following days of heavy rainfall in the US Pacific Northwest, authorities said on Monday.
Emergency officials ordered evacuations in parts of King County, south of Seattle, after a dam on the Green River failed near an industrial and commercial zone. The flooding alert issued by the US National Weather Service affected more than 46,000 people, warning of rapidly worsening conditions.
Local emergency services reported that the collapse raised serious concerns about sudden flooding, with roads at risk of being closed at any moment. Residents in parts of Tukwila, Renton, and Kent were urged to leave immediately as water levels rose.
The Washington State National Guard, which had already been deployed due to severe weather conditions, announced it was sending additional forces to the site to assist with evacuations and emergency response efforts.
The Pacific Northwest of the United States and Canada’s west coast have been hit by days of intense rainfall, triggering widespread flooding, infrastructure damage, and multiple evacuation orders.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as weather conditions remain unstable, raising concerns about further flooding in low-lying communities.
