The Indonesian authorities carried out large-scale evacuations and closed an international airport, in addition to raising the alert level to its highest level, following the eruption of the Mount Ruang volcano in North Sulawesi several times during the past hours.
Channel News Asia, in its English-language bulletin, quoted the Indonesian Volcanology Agency on Tuesday as saying, “The volcano erupted several times, the first at approximately 1:15 a.m. local time,” adding that it caused the emission of dense columns of volcanic ash in The sky more than 5 kilometers away.
The agency added that local residents were warned of the possibility of falling rocks and the tsunami waves due to the recent volcanic eruption.
Indonesia witnesses frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
