A series of severe storms have unleashed catastrophic floods across Alaska, displacing over 2,000 residents and causing widespread devastation.
The disaster prompted Governor Mike Dunleavy to formally request that the White House declare a major federal disaster to unlock emergency aid.
Beginning on 8 October, a chain of intense weather systems, including remnants of Typhoon Halong, brought powerful winds, record-high water levels, and extensive coastal and river flooding across northern, western, and southwestern Alaska.
According to Governor Dunleavy’s appeal, thousands of Alaskans have been forced to seek refuge in schools and urban shelters after significant damage to public infrastructure.
In the community of Kipnuk, around 90% of buildings, including vital public facilities, were destroyed, while in Quinhagak, 35% of structures sustained severe damage. Surrounding areas also reported heavy losses to homes and essential services.
Alaska’s congressional representatives, Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski, have joined the governor in urging President Donald Trump to approve the federal disaster declaration.
