After the release of “The Spy Who Fell to Earth” movie on 1 April this year tvia Netflix network, it triggered an enormous controversy especially in Egypt.  This documentary movie produced by BBC, the global television network, revolves around Ashraf Marwan; son-in-law of the Late Egyptian President Gamal Abdel-Nasser and the office manager of President Anwar El- Sadat.  This controversial case was raised couple of years ago and people were asking whether Marwan was an Israeli spy, a double agent, or a hero who was working for the sake of his homeland Egypt?

The movie’s 3 core lines are represented in this latest controversy beside the mysterious killing incident of Marwan after he fell from the Carlton House Terrace in London and investigations conducted in this regard. Regarding the third line, it’s all about the historical dimension since the creation of Israel and Marwan’s life story starting from getting married to Mona; Abdel-Nasser’s daughter, then the outbreak of October War and its consequences.

One of the movie’s great advantages is reviewing all point of views.

Ahron Bregman, a famous Jewish historian and writer of the famous book “The Angel”, Abdullah Hamouda, an Egyptian intelligence expert and Eli Zeira, former head of Israel’s military intelligence, stressed that Marwan was a traitor to Israel and misled Israelis during October War.

On the other hand, Shabtai Shavit, the former director general of the Mossad, Amos Gilboa, a former Israeli army commander and an intelligence researcher and Yossi Melman, an Israeli intelligence expert, believe that Marwan was just a traitor to his country and one of the most important Israel’s spies. Furthermore, they accused the Egyptian intelligence of killing him.

Despite this, the movie’s incidents seem to be neutral, they are actually in favor the Israelis’ claims in the absence of any official comments from the Egyptian side. At the same time, the movie also replies on many queries that deny all these allegations.

Eli Zeira’s might accuse Marawan of being a double agent in order to defend himself after he was considered as the reason behind Israel’s defeat in the war and the failure of the Israeli intelligence; as a result, he was fired from his position.  For Bergman, a Jewish writer who got a PHD in the Arab – Israeli conflict, “Bergman” felt sorry for Marwan’s death as he was the first person to mention Marwan’s name in his book and raised his case amid Israel’s trials to hide it.

The movie shows the first cooperation between Marwan and Israel after he called the Israeli embassy in London and went to meet the staff there. He used to deal confidently with no fear, so was it logical for a high level employee and a traitor to his homeland to have these spontaneous actions? Also, was it a coincidence for Marwan to make a call to the embassy first while Samuel Jorn, the director of the Mossad in Europe, was in a visit to London?

Jorn said that the documents handed by Marwan couldn’t be leaked by any country and Bergman confirmed that the information presented by Marawan showed that Egypt wasn’t ready for the war which is the opposite of what really happened!

Another ambiguous thing that happened before his death was when an Israeli newspaper published photos of Marawan while shaking hands with the former Egyptian President Mubrak and  a Mossad man in Cairo commented "Why can a Mossad agent embrace the president of Egypt?”

Israeli politicians are still praising Marwan and “The Angel” movie was produced to show how Marwan served both Israel and Egypt.

Marawan who was named as “ideal spy”, "spy of the century” and “the most important agent in Israel’s history”, received significant badges from El-Sadat for his major role in October War’s victory.

After all this, does it make sense that Marwan was considered as a traitor to Egypt and killed by the Egyptians authorities?
