Blumhouse and Universal announced Tuesday the release date for Ethan Hawke's new horror-thriller movie "The Black Phone" is due to hit the theaters on Jan. 28, 2022.

The movie is directed by Scott Derrickson from a screenplay he wrote with longtime collaborator C. Robert Cargill. The movie is based on the award-winning short story of the same title by Joe Hill.

"The Black Phone" features Mason Thames in his first film role as Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy who is abducted by a sadistic killer (Hawke) and trapped in a soundproof basement. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Shaw learns that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims.

It also stars Jeremy Davis and Madeleine McGraw. Derrickson, Cargill and Blumhouse’s Jason Blum are producing the picture with Hill serving as an executive producer.

The movie reunites Hawke with the filmmakers and producer of Blumhouse's 2012 horror smash "Sinister".
