Dr. Hussein Bassir

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Book Fair is not merely an annual occasion for purchasing books or discovering new publications; it has become one of the most important cultural events reflecting Egypt’s intellectual status and its historic role in leading the cultural movement in the Arab world. Hosted by the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the fair derives its significance from the symbolism of the place itself. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is not simply a building containing millions of books; it is an extension of a great human idea represented by the ancient Library of Alexandria, which was a beacon of knowledge, philosophy, and dialogue among civilizations.

In this context, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Book Fair has transformed into a comprehensive celebration of knowledge, where writers meet readers, researchers engage with intellectuals, children discover the world of reading, and young people encounter ideas that shape the future. The book remains at the heart of the event, but the fair goes far beyond book sales, offering intellectual seminars, literary discussions, artistic workshops, and educational activities that make it a vibrant space for dialogue, creativity, and critical thinking.

The cultural message of the fair is clear: building a human being begins with building awareness. Knowledge is not a luxury; it is a necessity for confronting ignorance, extremism, and misinformation, while preparing society to face a rapidly changing world. Encouraging reading is therefore not simply about promoting a hobby; it is about creating a way of life and developing individuals capable of critical thinking, respecting diversity, and contributing positively to their communities.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina presents a unique model that connects written knowledge with tangible heritage. Visitors do not only read about Egyptian civilization; they can also enter the Antiquities Museum of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and see the physical evidence of that civilization with their own eyes. Thus, the book becomes a gateway to understanding artifacts, while artifacts become living witnesses to the knowledge contained in books.

The Antiquities Museum at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is one of Egypt’s most distinctive museums because it is uniquely located inside a world-class library. This exceptional setting creates a direct connection between scientific research, education, and cultural enjoyment. The museum houses a remarkable collection of ancient Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Coptic, and Islamic artifacts, reflecting the continuity and richness of Egyptian civilization throughout thousands of years.

Among its treasures are rare objects recovered from the Mediterranean seabed, royal statues, religious artifacts, everyday tools, coins, amulets, and inscriptions that reveal fascinating details about the lives of Egyptians across different historical periods. Through this diversity, visitors discover that civilization is not only about kings, temples, and monuments, but also about ordinary people, their dreams, their work, their creativity, and their beliefs.

The museum tells the story of Alexandria as a global city. Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria became the capital of the Ptolemaic Kingdom and a center of science, philosophy, and cultural exchange. It later flourished during the Roman period and continued its importance through the Coptic and Islamic eras until modern times. Alexandria has always been a meeting point of civilizations and a bridge between East and West, making its history an essential chapter in the history of humanity.

During the Book Fair, the museum organizes special programs including guided tours, scientific lectures, educational workshops, and interactive activities for children and young people. The goal is no longer only to display artifacts, but to create a meaningful relationship between society and its heritage, connecting new generations with their cultural roots.

Children and youth receive special attention because they represent the future guardians of heritage. Educational programs rely on storytelling, games, artistic activities, and digital tools to present history in an engaging and accessible way, allowing children to discover the past themselves and feel that they are part of this long and remarkable civilization.

Through my experience in archaeology and literary writing, I believe that archaeology and literature are two complementary fields. Archaeology provides documented facts and evidence, while literature gives these facts a human dimension. An artifact tells us what happened, but a novel explores how people felt, loved, feared, dreamed, struggled, and lived through those moments. Scientific research nourishes imagination, while literature brings history closer to the hearts and minds of readers.

This is why many of my books and novels draw inspiration from ancient Egyptian civilization. It is not merely a distant past, but a vast human reservoir of ideas, values, and beauty. Egyptian civilization continues to inspire the world because it addressed universal questions that remain relevant today: life and death, eternity, justice, faith, love, power, and knowledge.

When writing historical fiction, I always respect established historical facts while allowing imagination to explore the spaces left open by historical sources. Imagination is not a substitute for history; rather, it is a means of reviving it, presenting it in an engaging literary form, and bringing historical figures and events closer to contemporary readers without compromising authenticity.

Historical novels play a crucial role in spreading awareness of Egyptian civilization, especially among young people. Many readers may not initially approach academic history books, but they are attracted to novels. Through historical fiction, they discover personalities, events, and places from the past, which encourages them to search, read more, and visit museums and archaeological sites. In this way, literature becomes a bridge between knowledge and enjoyment, between the past and the present.

Ultimately, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina remains a unique cultural institution that brings together the book and the museum, heritage and innovation, scientific research and literary creativity. It proves that civilization is not merely silent artifacts or pages in history books; it is a living force that continues to inspire generations. The book will always remain the first key to understanding humanity, building awareness, and creating the future.
