Thailand and Cambodia signed a joint declaration on a peace agreement today, Sunday, marking an official step toward halting hostilities and restoring stability in disputed border areas between the two countries.

According to the Malaysian Bernama news agency, the agreement was signed by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Manet on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit, which began today in Kuala Lumpur.

The signing ceremony was attended by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in his capacity as ASEAN chair this year, along with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The new declaration reinforces the ceasefire understanding reached in July following bilateral talks between the two nations.

It also stipulates the formation of an ASEAN monitoring team to oversee implementation and ensure that clashes do not recur along the border regions.

The agreement is considered a significant diplomatic achievement for ASEAN, reflecting its commitment to conflict prevention, regional stability, and cooperation, in line with Malaysia’s 2025 chairmanship theme: “Integration and Sustainability.”

U.S. President Donald Trump praised the peace agreement, stating that he succeeded in ending the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and congratulating the leaders of both countries on achieving peace.

During his participation in the ASEAN leaders’ summit in Kuala Lumpur, Trump said, “We ended the eighth war under my administration,” adding that trade agreements with Thailand and Cambodia will also be announced. He emphasized that his administration’s goal is to stop wars and promote peace worldwide.
