Thailand has accepted an invitation to join BRICS as a partner state, marking a significant step toward eventual full membership.
Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nikondet Phalangkun confirmed the decision, approved by the cabinet on December 24 and communicated to Russia, BRICS’ 2024 chair.
As a partner, Thailand seeks to strengthen economic ties with BRICS nations, enhance collaboration with developing countries, and position itself as a bridge between BRICS and other global partners.
Thailand has actively participated in key BRICS events, including the "BRICS Dialogue with Developing Countries," and submitted its intent to pursue full membership in June.
Originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, BRICS has expanded to include South Africa and, recently, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
