Thailand's royal palace has announced the death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, at the age of 47 after more than three years in hospital following a sudden medical emergency.
In a statement, the Royal Household Bureau said the princess suffered from an intestinal infection and that her condition gradually deteriorated before she "passed away peacefully" on Thursday evening.
The princess had been hospitalized since December 2022 after collapsing during a military dog training session. In 2025, the palace disclosed that she was suffering from a severe bloodstream infection and required life-support systems to maintain lung and kidney functions.
Princess Bajrakitiyabha was the only daughter of King Vajiralongkorn from his first marriage and was regarded as one of the most prominent members of the Thai royal family. She had also served in a senior role within the king's personal guard unit.
Her body will lie in state at Bangkok's Grand Palace, with funeral ceremonies to be held according to royal traditions and with full honors.
