Tesla has taken a significant step toward launching its highly anticipated robotaxi service after securing its first regulatory approval in California.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) confirmed that the electric vehicle giant has obtained a transportation charter permit, a crucial requirement for offering ride-hailing services.

The permit typically applies to companies that operate fleets with human drivers, allowing Tesla to own and manage vehicles for pre-arranged employee transportation.

However, this authorization alone does not permit Tesla to operate self-driving taxi services or offer rides to the public.

A CPUC spokesperson clarified that the company still needs additional approvals before fully deploying autonomous ride-hailing services in California.

With slowing vehicle sales, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has shifted focus toward autonomous transportation. Last year, he pledged to introduce self-driving taxi services in California and Texas by the end of 2025.

In October, Tesla unveiled the Cybercab, a futuristic robotaxi without a steering wheel or pedals, signaling its commitment to the autonomous vehicle industry.

Regulators revealed that Tesla applied for its transportation charter permit in November 2024 but has yet to submit applications for the remaining required licenses.

As Tesla moves forward, industry experts are closely watching how the company navigates regulatory hurdles to bring its robotaxi vision to reality.
