Tesla is recalling 1.68 million vehicles in China to implement a remote software upgrade addressing issues with trunk latches, according to China's market regulator.
The recall, announced late Tuesday, targets certain imported Model S and Model X vehicles, as well as domestically produced Model 3 and Model Y cars manufactured between October 15, 2020, and July 17, 2024.
The software fix aims to ensure that drivers receive warnings when the trunk is not securely closed.
Additionally, the recall notice indicated that vehicles with defective trunk latches would receive free repairs.
The State Administration for Market Regulation emphasized the risk of an unlocked trunk lid opening while driving, potentially obstructing the driver's vision, though it did not confirm any incidents involving Tesla cars.
Tesla, which sees China as a critical market and production hub, faces mounting competition from local electric vehicle manufacturers.
The company recently reported a significant drop in second-quarter net income due to declining sales, despite price cuts and low-interest financing offers.
