Tesla chief executive Elon Musk said the electric vehicle maker plans to introduce its humanoid robots, known as Optimus, to the market by the end of 2027, outlining an ambitious timeline for one of the company’s most closely watched projects.

Speaking on Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Musk said the Optimus robots are already performing basic tasks inside Tesla’s electric vehicle manufacturing facilities, marking a significant step forward in their development.

Musk explained that Tesla intends to commercialise the humanoid robots only once the company is fully confident in their reliability, safety and functional capabilities. He added that the goal is to achieve exceptionally high standards across all three areas before making Optimus available to customers.

“You could essentially ask it to do almost anything you want,” Musk said, describing the robot’s anticipated versatility.

During his remarks in Davos, Musk repeated his long-held view that humanoid robots will eventually outnumber humans and be capable of meeting a wide range of everyday needs. He said future applications could include caring for children, the elderly and pets, as well as performing household and professional tasks.

The Tesla CEO has previously suggested that Optimus could even become highly skilled in complex fields such as surgery, underscoring his belief in the rapid evolution of robotics and artificial intelligence.

Musk also reiterated his forecast that artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence in the near future. He said he expects AI systems to become smarter than any individual human by the end of this year, or no later than next year.

Tesla has positioned Optimus as a long-term pillar of its growth strategy, alongside electric vehicles, energy storage and AI-driven technologies. Investors and industry analysts are closely watching the project, as humanoid robots are increasingly seen as a potential breakthrough market with far-reaching economic and social implications.
