During the seminar held at Hangar Theater of Cairo Opera House within the activities of Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), Gilliam added: “If you are a young director, focus on the details of your film or project without preoccupying yourself with what you expect from it, your future aspirations or your artistic history and your career after 20 years, but focus only on what you do so far and how you can add your identity and ideas.”
“Do not make any concessions for the direction of production companies or for fear of the reactions of critics and the audience, as you might think that you can compromise today and when you achieve you ambitions and succeed you will be able to do what you want, because then you will do nothing,” the film director said.
As for his work in Hollywood, he confirmed, “I am completely satisfied with my work in Hollywood in the 1990s, during which I directed my films” 12 Monkeys “and “The Fisher King”.

“But I don’t prefer the Hollywood’s thought nor the restrictive style of its studios, I prefer to implement what I want in my work without being restricted by intellectual or political orientations or tendencies,” Gilliam noted.
About his opinion on the Superheroes films, the 79-year-old British-American film director said that he does not like or prefer them despite the quality and effort exerted in making them.
On Netflix experience, he stressed that it has provided good opportunities to many directors whose work is excellent but it lacks their own fingerprint. It also lacks cinematic screening, big screen, and cinema atmosphere, “However, I do not refuse to work with them,” Gilliam revealed.

Gilliam also talked about his most difficult film “Brazil” produced in 1985, as this movie took a long time (9 months) in its preparations and filming, because of Gilliam’s insistence to implement all the contents of the storyboard he prepared, hence there were some difficulties so the director was forces to omit some scenes. However, the film was so good and the critics praised it and it received many awards
Noteworthy, Gilliam was honored during Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF).
